I'm sure a Merc guy will chime in.

I was told that it's not threaded in early motors like this one.......

Work continues......lot's of help from FiberGlassics - Mercury outboard discussion group.
Since gas tank had a small leak - judging from accumulation of dirt in one area - the tank was taken apart for cleaning and installing new gaskets to seal the leak.....today project is to clean the tanks inside surfaces, cut the gaskets and assemble it back.

Petcock once removed - was cleaned with carburetor cleaner and is operational - discovered that has threaded hole to install original fuel filter - Got the filter form Joe at Ferguson-Poole Marine - need to clean the thread with 2-56 tap

Taking the water pump apart trying to get to the impeller - currently soaking impeller brass cover - stuck in the housing.

Over all the project is moving forward with a "little help from my friends" :)

Hi Jabe,

Well, the petcock is still clogged - but just found out from Joe at fergusonpoolemarine that there is a filter element on it ( I was thinking of on installing some fuel filter in gas line - but knowing this I am not going to). So the simplest way would be remove the petcock and clean it with carburetor cleaner or something of that nature (paint remover).............but by doing that I will be opening a (small) can of warms - new gasket, maybe new filter , meaning $$ and time
Good thing is that they can be obtained
Anyway, work is getting in the way of all projects big and small.

just a thought, i redid my tank on my '47 Neptune, i used paint stripper with a handfull of 1/4" flat washers and gently rotating the washers inside.........then flushed with water....
just somethin i tried and worked well, it occured to me from the old days of furniture restoreing, stripping old varnish off........ :hmm:

That’s a good start. Does it have spark?

did cylinder pressure test: 125 and 117 lbs. One of the Mercury buffs in my area agreed to get it started for me - after prior check of major components ......I am VERY happy about that!
Did some cleaning and took the gas tank off - unfortunately didn't think trough the consequent ions of using carburetor cleaner for that task and end up stripping a lot of paint.....there was not much of it , but still.
Today cleaning gas tank......later on - carburetor.

Well, after some chewing I am trying two way approach.....see which one I will have to go with
Having two guys in the area that are very knowledgeable about Mercury outboards I am trying to see what it would take to have one of them to look over the motor and replace stuff that matter the most.
Secondly I am printing the parts list and will take a hard look to see if I can replace crankshaft oil seals, impeller and inspect the coils........without ruining the motor
