The normal retail sale of CCA plywood to the public was banned in the US in 2004 +/- and didnt cause the problems the newer ACQ treatment does. Pontoon (and some other tin boat makers) still use CCA plywood (pontoonstuff.com sells it).

Micronized CQ plywood MCQ is rumored to be aluminum boat safe, but I havent seen any long term effect, or lack there of, posted by DIY boat rebuilders.

What most refer to as PT now is whats available at your local lumber yard. Its generally fairly heavy, damp from the PT process, tends to warp as it dries and is ACQ. And shouldnt be used.

What might be described as safe PT is hard to find, tylically expensive and costly to ship. Lots of safe, acceptable choices that can be used that are more readily available.

I just did a little research on pressure treaded wood, seems the older stuff is LESS corrosive to aluminum that what is currently used. The new stuff mostly contains copper, a big no-no for aluminum. Looks like I was lucky in the timing of my use of exterior plywood from the late 1990's, the big change was later according to a few different articles.

I am not sure what "pressure treated plywood" is but I have used what is discribed as "exterior grade" without issue. Some with it sealed and some not, I had unsealed plywood on the exterior of the transom under a jack plate from 1998 until 2016 without any sign of corosion but I may have just had board from the right supplier.
From what I have read Star board is not really considered structural but I would like to try it due to the lighter weight, anybody used it as flooring?

Doing some research on flooring options.

Boater brother in law says Star Board is the best way to go. I was thinking pressure treated 1/2 plywood, varnished and outdoor carpet.

Some online forums say pressure treated plywood will corrode our boats, is that right?

I really want carpet for barefoot comfort....

The worst holes are under the wood and above the water line so going to 1/4 Rivet will be invisible.

I sure hope comes through with that 3x Rivet gun!

I've needed to 'upsize' a few as well, particularly those that attach my transom braces to the transom itself. If you do go to 1/4", you might consider using 'Modified Brazier' head rivets since they're a bit smaller and flatter than the Universal ones and, to my eye anyway, blend in a bit better.


Just a note, the 56 and earlier boats used mostly brazier head rivets, 3/16" & 7/32", the 1950 Flyers used 7/32" modified brazier heads and flush rivets, I think the other early race boats used the same. . All of the Vagabonds I have worked on use 0.063" 5052 on the decks and seats other structural items. The 57 up Vagabonds and Rockets I have worked on used mostly universal head rivets.
