I couldn't live without a basement. It's where I do all my work and store stuff. I guess if I gave up boating and motorcycling, paid someone to do the lawn and paid someone to fix everything that broke or needed attention I could live without a basement.

Hey Jabe,,remember the ice storm of 91. We were without power for a month. The trees coming down sounded like Howitzers. Used the wood stove,,put a box in the kitchen window for a fridge. I never understood why places that are prone to tornado's don't have basements ?????? I never heard of house without a basement until I was transferred to Memphis. The realtor saw me opening all of the doors in the house....What are you looking for ? The basement steps. There are no houses here with basements !

After hurricane Hugo, we got power for about 15 minutes the next day. Then flames were coming out of the transformer on the pole so they cut our power off for 12 days. My next door neighbor is on city water and I'm on a well so we took our washing machine hose and ran a hose to his outside spigot. Best water pressure I ever had! We cooked on the grill and a gas stove and for lights I made a harness using Volvo brake light sockets with a fog light switch for on and off. When we finally got power back, we were all ready for the camping trip to be over!

I shy away from the mainstream media when it comes to these events. So much hype and gnashing of teeth. There are much better calm, informative sites to get real information.

My son was lucky and so was I. Folks in SW FLA, not so much. This was the real deal and hopefully folks won't be so damn ill-prepared the next time. It really isn't that hard to be self-sufficient for an extended period of time. It just takes a little thought and preparation. I would venture to say, knowing Rivetheads, that most of you would do just fine faced with a similar situation.
Now it is time to party. Save me a seat around the campfire boys and girls.

CNN seemed disappointed that the damage was not worst. They started talking up the hurricane to make it still sound bad. One of the video clips I have seen is CNN claiming that it could be worst and that people are all in grave danger, in the back ground is a lady walking her dog...

My Florida Family And Friends have mostly all reported in that they are doing fine with only minimal damage. They all seemed prepared for the worst and luckily they did not get it.
